Lionsgate made the announcement during the opening week of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, after originally setting the release date for May 21, 2021. The new date was pushed back to May 27, 2022, due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and then further to March 24, 2023. It seems that the studio wanted to avoid having the movie open against Top Gun: Maverick, which is set to be released on the same day.
